  1. BIND

    BIND

    BIND - Open Source DNS

BIND is open source software that implements the Domain Name System (DNS) protocols for the Internet. It is a reference implementation of those protocols, but it is also production-grade software, suitable for use in high-volume and high-reliability applications. BIND is available for free download under the terms of the ISC License, a BSD style license. BIND is by far the most widely used DNS software on the Internet. It provides a robust and stable platform on top of which organizations can build distributed computing systems with the knowledge that those systems are fully compliant with published DNS standards.

  2. PowerDNS

    PowerDNS

    PowerDNS - Open Source DNS

The PowerDNS daemon is a versatile name server which supports a large number of back ends. These back ends can either be plain zone files or be more dynamic in nature. Additionally, through use of clever programming techniques, PowerDNS offers very high domain resolution performance. PowerDNS consists of two parts: the Authoritative Server and the Recursor. Other name servers fully combine these functions, PowerDNS offers them separately, but can mix both authoritative and recursive usage seamlessly. The Authoritative Server will answer questions about domains it knows about, but will not go out on the net to resolve queries about other domains. However, it can use a recursing backend to provide that functionality. Depending on your needs, this backend can either be the PowerDNS recursor or an external one.

  3. MaraDNS

    MaraDNS

    MaraDNS - Open Source DNS

MaraDNS is a package that implements the Domain Name Service (DNS), an essential internet service. MaraDNS is open source software. People like MaraDNS because it's small, lightweight, easy to set up, and remarkably secure. It's also cross platform -- the program runs both in Windows and in UNIX clones. MaraDNS is a finished and stable project and there are no plans to add new features at this time. MaraDNS support (including bug reports) is available on a limited basis on the MaraDNS mailing list.

  4. NSD

    NSD

    NSD - Open Source DNS

NSD is an authoritative only, memory efficient, highly secure and simple to configure open source domain name server. NSD (Name Server Daemon) is a server implementation for the Domain Name System (DNS). It is developed and maintained by NLnet Labs of Amsterdam in cooperation with the RIPE NCC. NSD was conceptually built from scratch as a purely authoritative name server; not implementing the recursive caching functions by design. NSD allowing you to split your authoritative and resolving servers for significantly better security.

  5. PDNSD

    PDNSD

    PDNSD - Open Source DNS

PDNSD is a caching DNS proxy server created originally by Thomas Moestl and currently maintained by Paul Rombouts. Pdnsd is configurable by a config file or using the program pdns-ctl that comes with the package. Unlike BIND, PDNSD stores cached DNS records on disk for long term retention and will not purge the cache upon program startup or shutdown. PDNSD is designed to be highly adaptable to situations where net connectivity is slow, unreliable, unavailable, or highly dynamic, as is the case with wifi hotspots or dialup internet. This program also has limited capability of acting as an authoritative name server for a local DNS zone within a private network.
