Apache Drill is an attempt to build an open source version of Google Dremel, and the project was recently accepted into the Apache Incubator program. It’s supported by MapR, a company that sells a modified version of Hadoop with proprietary customizations.

Drill provides a distributed execution engine for interactive queries. HBase™ represents a supported data source for Drill.

Today these systems compile higher-level languages (e.g., HiveQL, Pig Latin) into MapReduce jobs. Once Drill is available, these systems may support Drill as an underlying low-latency execution engine, enabling interactive queries across billions of records.
