The Endian Firewall is an open source GNU/Linux distribution that specializes on Routing/Firewalling and Unified Threat Management. It is being developed by the Italian Endian Srl and the community. Endian is originally based on IPCop, which itself was a fork of Smoothwall.

Smoothwall is a Linux distribution designed to be used as an open source firewall. Designed for ease of use, Smoothwall is configured via a web-based GUI, and requires little or no knowledge of Linux to install or use. Smoothwall is also a private software company based in the UK that develops firewall and web content filtering software, and which also maintains the  SmoothWall open source project.

Because Wikipedia is one of the world's largest websites, achieving scalability through multiple layers of caching and database replication has also been a major concern for developers. Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects continue to define a large part of the requirement set for Media Wiki.
