FXO is foreign eXchange Office interface, and is the plug on the phone that receives Analog telephony services, typically from the local phone company’s central office, of the Public Switched Telephone Netwok (PSTN). In other words, an FXO interface points to the Telco office.

Primarily, the services provided by an FXO interface to any Telco network device are to on-hook / off-hook indication (loop closure).
